What is actually happening inside your shower head
Every time you shower, water collects in the spray plate, the part that distributes water across your body. When you turn the shower off, that water sits in the warm plastic housing. It does not drain completely. It does not dry out. In those conditions, bacteria and fungi multiply rapidly.
The next time you turn the shower on, those microbes become airborne as part of the fine mist. You breathe them in. They settle on your skin, in your eyes, your ears.
More than just Legionella: what the research shows
Most people who have heard of shower head bacteria think only of Legionella. The reality, as the BBC and wider scientific literature confirm, is considerably broader.
Lungs
Legionella bacteria causes Legionnaires’ disease, a serious pneumonia with a 12% death rate. It is widely believed to be frequently misdiagnosed as ordinary pneumonia, meaning the true number of cases is significantly higher than reported. The same bacteria causes Pontiac fever, a flu-like illness with a 95% attack rate. If your family has recurring flu symptoms, your shower may be a contributing factor.
Hair and scalp
Malassezia restricta, a fungus found in shower heads, is a known cause of dandruff and folliculitis. Approximately half of all adults experience dandruff at some point. Most attribute it to dry skin or stress. Very few have considered their shower head.
Eyes
Malassezia fungi can cause keratitis, a painful infection of the cornea. Acanthamoeba, another organism found in shower environments, can cause a condition that progresses to permanent blindness. Contact lens wearers face a substantially higher risk, as lenses provide an attachment point for these organisms.
Ears
Pseudomonas aeruginosa is commonly found in shower environments and is a leading cause of swimmer’s ear, clinically known as otitis externa. Recurring ear infections in children who shower regularly may have a source that has never been investigated.
Stomach and digestive system
Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis has been detected in shower water. Research has linked this organism to Crohn’s disease, a chronic inflammatory bowel condition affecting around 115,000 people in the UK. The potential role of shower-borne bacteria as a contributing cause is under-reported.
Skin
Malassezia is linked to skin infections, particularly following beauty treatments that break the skin barrier. Showering with contaminated water in the period following such treatments raises infection risk considerably.
Blood
Pseudomonas aeruginosa can enter the bloodstream through breaks in the skin, causing septicaemia. This risk is elevated for people with compromised immune systems, open wounds, or those recovering from surgery.
Why traditional shower heads are the problem
