How to Clean a Shower Head — and Why It Might Not Be Enough
If you search for how to clean a shower head, you'll find the same advice repeated everywhere. Soak it in white vinegar for 45 minutes. Scrub the nozzles with a toothbrush. Rinse thoroughly. Some guides suggest a 1:1 mix of vinegar and water. Others recommend dedicated descaling products. A few mention bleach.
All of this is reasonable advice for removing limescale and restoring water pressure. I have no quarrel with it on those terms. But if your goal is to reduce the bacterial load inside your shower head, I want to be honest about what this kind of cleaning does and doesn't achieve.
What vinegar actually does
Vinegar's main action in shower head cleaning is descaling, dissolving the calcium carbonate deposits that build up from hard water and block the spray nozzles. This is genuinely useful. Blocked nozzles reduce flow, create additional stagnant pockets where bacteria can multiply, and shorten the functional life of the shower head.
On bacteria, the picture is more complicated. Research published in BMC Oral Health found that vinegar does have genuine antibiofilm activity, exposure for 30 minutes reduced bacterial viability and partially disrupted biofilm structure. So it's not entirely without effect.
But there's an important caveat. That research was conducted under controlled conditions with direct exposure of the biofilm to the vinegar solution. When you soak a shower head in vinegar, the solution needs to penetrate the internal passages and reach the surfaces where the biofilm has formed. In a complex shower head with multiple internal chambers, restricted channels and rubber seals, that penetration is far from guaranteed.
What cleaning doesn't reach
The bacteria in a shower head aren't primarily sitting on the surface of the nozzles where a toothbrush can reach them. They're living in a biofilm on the internal walls of the shower head body, in the passages that carry water from the inlet to the nozzles.
Biofilm is not a layer of loose bacteria. It's a structured community embedded in a matrix of polysaccharides and proteins that the bacteria themselves produce as a protective structure. This matrix is specifically designed to resist environmental stresses, including cleaning agents. Disrupting it requires either direct mechanical scrubbing, which can't reach inside a sealed shower head, or sustained chemical exposure at concentrations and contact times that a 45 minute vinegar soak doesn't reliably deliver.
The honest position on cleaning
I'm not suggesting you shouldn't clean your shower head. You should. Descaling it regularly maintains water pressure, extends its useful life, and removes the limescale build up that can provide additional surfaces for bacteria to colonise. Cleaning is worth doing.
But I'd encourage you to be realistic about what it achieves on the bacterial side. Research consistently shows that standard shower heads accumulate bacteria over time regardless of cleaning routines, and that the concentrations inside a used shower head can be more than 100 times higher than in the tap water supplying it.
